Music. Besides love, I don’t think there is anything in this world quite as powerful, that has the ability to connect people. No matter who you are or how old you are, it’s a language we can all understand.

That feeling when you meet someone who loves your fave artist or song as much as you do = Instant human connection.
Since the late 90’s I’ve been to many a live gig and music festival. From my first real concert (Bryan Adams – thanks Dad for driving us country girls 7 hours to the big smoke to see him!) it quickly became a favourite pastime and I took great pride in growing my CD collection, and raiding Dads (except for Anne Murray. She’s all yours Dad).
These days I’m enjoying re-discovering my fave artists and exploring new music after years of being subjected to Justine Clark, Hi5 and the Wiggles. Toot toot chugga chugga big red car!
Music Streaming services have become my bestie with suggestions tailored to what I already listen to. Life changing! I currently subscribe to two services, because both have different functionality and I can’t decide which one I like better. (There’s that indecisive Libra thing yet again)
I love how we all consume music in different ways. For me it’s about being taken to a different place whilst on my morning city commute, it’s solitude when flying (what I’m doing right now whilst writing this), it’s company whilst cooking dinner, it’s a sing-a-long disco with my kids, it’s background during a yoga class and every now and then when we can get a babysitter, it’s the live experience or festival.
“There’s nothing to compare to live music, there just isn’t anything.” Gloria Gaynor

Friends of mine spend their time trawling record stores for vinyls, one plays in a band where music is his life, another is currently doing a sound engineering course such is her love of music, a cousin is completely obsessed with metal and another friend has a cool ritual when flying. Every take off and landing she scans for her perfect song. By doing this she can link her trips to songs. I love that!
However you choose to listen to music, one thing that’s clear is that music is an escape for us all.

My taste in music is really broad, I pretty much like every genre, even the heavy stuff. Hubby almost fell over on our first date when I told him I love Rage Against The Machine and Metallica. Pretty sure that’s why he asked me to marry him!
But for some reason I find myself drawn to sad songs. Not because I’m particularly feeling sad (although we have had our fair share of sadness this year – that’s a whole other blog post) but because I find a certain beauty in them. Whether it be in their melody, the artists voice or the lyrics. Songs that no matter what your mood, have the ability to almost move you to tears or just make you want to sing-a-long.
So in the first of a series of music posts, I thought I’d share my Melancholy Playlist. Not to make you sad, but to share the beauty.
